Mochizuki Chiyome was a 16th-century Japanese noblewoman who created a group of kunoichi, or female ninja. She recruited orphans, prostitutes, and victims of the civil wars of the Sengoku period and trained them as information gatherers and verifiers, seductresses, messengers, and assassins. The girls learned to disguise themselves as miko (Shinto shrine maidens), actresses, prostitutes or geisha. Eventually, Chiyome and her kunoichi had set up an extensive network of some 200-300 agents.
