Basic Knowledge of PTFE Teflon CNC Machining
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) resin, commonly known as the ""Plastic King,"" is widely used in various industries due to its unique properties. The PTFE plastic possesses high-temperature resistance, non-oxidizing and non-dissolving characteristics, exceptional chemical stability, and excellent dielectric properties, making it an indispensable material in industries primarily focused on chemistry and mechanics. Machining PTFE resin is typically in the form of powder or dispersion, with a high molecular weight (8.88×106 to 3.17×107) and high crystallinity (92% to 98%). The PTFE plastic sheet has a melting point of 327°C and contains strong F-C bonds in its molecular structure.
How is PTFE Plastic Machined?
Machining method
PTFE is a polymer material that usually requires the use of professional mechanical equipment for processing. The following are several common machining methods.
1. Turning
Turning is a machining method used to make round parts. Turning PTFE using a lathe allows the creation of cylindrical parts of varying diameters and lengths.
When turning PTFE plastic, the following should be noted:
- Use appropriate turning tools. Because custom PTFE has high softness and good plastic deformation ability, it is recommended to use arc-shaped tools.
- Control the feed rate and rotational speed of turning tools. The processing temperature of PTFE plastic sheet should be as low as possible because its melting point is as high as 327°C and it is easy to burn and decompose.
- Chip handling. PTFE chips tend to get tangled, so you can use special chip cleaning equipment or clean them manually.
2. Milling
PTFE milling is a machining method that can produce parts of various shapes. It can produce parts of various shapes such as planes, curves, edges, etc., and is suitable for the production of small batches of parts.
When milling PTFE, the following should be noted:
- Use a suitable milling cutter. It is usually recommended to use an end mill or ball nose cutter.
- Control feed rate and rotational speed. The processing temperature of PTFE plastic should be as low as possible. Controlling the feed speed and rotation speed can reduce the processing temperature.
- Chip handling. Just like turning, use special chip cleaning equipment or clean it by hand.
3. Drilling
Drilling is a machining method for processing circular holes, which is suitable for manufacturing PTFE pipes, valves and other parts that require holes.
When drilling holes in custom PTFE, the following should be noted:
- Use a suitable drill bit. It is recommended to use a sharp angle drill bit or a grinding wheel drill bit.
- Control feed rate and rotational speed. When drilling, excessive acceleration should be avoided to avoid quality problems such as melting and annealing of the teflon CNC material.
- Chip handling. To prevent excessive chips when drilling, it is recommended to use special chip cleaning equipment or clean them manually.
Precautions
- The PTFE CNC machining involves high temperatures, so safety precautions must be taken.
- Mechanical shock and vibration should be minimized during processing.
- Ensure that machine tools and tools are kept in good condition to avoid excessive heat and friction.
- Before cutting, make sure that the density of the PTFE plastic material is uniform and there are no bubbles, impurities and other quality problems.
